"Medicine Cards: The discovery of power through
the ways of animals"
by Jamie Sams and David Carson
The definition
of "medicine" in the American Indian lexicon differs from the
traditional definition. While we think of medicine as something taken to cure or
prevent a disease, in native terms it means those things that improve one's
connection to Mother Earth and her children. Also, according to Jamie
Sams, medicine is "anything which brings personal power, strength, and
understanding." The Medicine Cards call on the energies of animals to
convey messages and assist in healing. For example, the Buffalo symbolizes
prayer and abundance, indicating that one either needs to spend energy in prayer
or may be the answer to someone's prayer.
"Sacred Path Cards: the discovery of self through
sacred teachings"
by Jamie Sams Companion book is The Sacred Path Workbook.
Sams
introduces many elements of American Indian or "Native American" life
as archetypical energies that point to areas needing growth or celebrating areas
of achievement. Everyday items such as the Cradleboard and the Shawl teach as
much as the more celebrated Warbonnet and Sun Dance. Sams also introduces
the concepts of the directions as being relevant to our growth with shields
representing East, South, West and North. Also utilizes "The
Sacred Path Workbook", a companion volume to the Sacred Path deck.
"Healing With the Angels Oracle
Cards" by Doreen Virtue, PhD
Designed
to relay messages from the angels whom Doreen Virtue has become so famous for
working, these oracle cards are different from the other decks in that they use
qualities and events rather than specific items to point out areas in which we
need work, may be having difficulties, or simply need reassurance. The layouts
are much simpler, working with timelines rather than being symbolic of a
particular quality. For example, drawing the "Divine
Timing" card indicates that events are occurring in the order necessary to
achieve your highest good.
